Chronic pain
You and your altered ego: massage and chronic pain.
Massage therapy, in combination with biofeedback, and specific exercises, can minimize, control, and sometimes even eliminate chronic pain.
During an assessment, a massage therapist’s expertise in the musculo-skeletal system may identify missed causes of pain that can be rectified through postural retraining exercises, or deep tissue Swedish massage technique.
Chronic pain is that which lasts beyond three months. Pain becomes chronic if it lasts beyond the time an injury should have healed following an accident or surgery. If the organic source of chronic pain cannot be found, fear, anxiety or depression may result.
As emotion partly determines how you experience pain, biofeedback techniques increase massage’s efficacy. Pain travels along nerve pathways, and arrives in the cerebral cortex of the brain, where we consciously decide how to respond to it, either minimizing or intensifying it in the mind.
Positive, empowering emotions result in conscious relaxation, and decreased muscle spasms, pain, stress, depression, or anxiety.
Our approach
A skillful Ashby massage therapist differentiates injured tissue, from that which is healthy but tense. Structures adjacent to injured sites may be tense in reaction to pain, to compensate in function for injured tissue, or to protect an injured area.
We help you to use biofeedback to allow your mind to balance inhalation with exhalation, focus inwards, observe these physical differences, and help with conscious relaxation. As tension dissipates, overall pain levels decrease.
